I've always loved spring.
I love the way that things around us begin waking up, almost coming back to life from the depths of winter. I love that first time I crank up the lawn mower when just weeks before I was shoveling snow and there were no signs of life in my yard.
In much the same way, I love Easter.
It reminds me of the power behind our faith.
The same power that created all that I see around me, puts it all to sleep every fall, and wakes it all up every spring, is celebrated in the resurrection.
See what the psalmist writes in Psalm 148:
Praise him, high heaven, praise him, heavenly rain clouds; Praise, oh let them praise the name of God - he spoke the word, and there they were! He set them in place from all time to eternity; He gave his orders, and that's it! Mountains and all hills, apple orchards and cedar forests; Wild beasts and herds of cattle, snakes, and birds in flight; (Psalm 148:4-6,9,10 MSG)
Here the psalmist is seeing the power and love of God displayed for all and calling us to respond. Easter is likewise, the power and love of God on display for all to see. But the question remains: how will you respond?
I love how Luther answers this question: "In the bonds of Death He lay Who for our offence was slain; But the Lord is risen to-day, Christ hath brought us life again, Wherefore let us all rejoice, Singing loud, with cheerful voice, Hallelujah!"
We worship Jesus because He is risen.
He is risen because he is the perfect fulfillment of Love and Power.
By responding to who He is and what He has done, we align ourselves with the restoration work he began on the cross and we continue it in worship and service.
May we never cease to remember the call of psalmist to respond:
Let them praise the name of God-it's the only Name worth praising. His radiance exceeds anything in earth and sky; he's built a monument - his very own people! Praise from all who love God! Israel's children, intimate friends of God. Hallelujah! (Psalm 148:13,14 MSG)
